Termite Information
The most common house infesting termite is the Subterranean termite .Subterranean termite nests or colonies are very similar to ants. The majority of the colony population is made up of worker termites. Worker termites are responsible for building tunnels, caring for eggs, and finding food. Winged termites (swarmers) produce the offspring in the colony and swarm at certain times of the year. The soldier termites defend the colony. Termites are highly organized, efficient and persistent pests. They are attracted to moist areas in the home such as basements, crawl spaces, garages and porches.
Subterranean termites live in the soil and leave mud shelter tubes/tunnels and exit holes as a sign of infestation. Subterranean termites travel through a mud shelter tube from the soil to their food source. These food sources include wood fibers and other forms of cellulose that they eat, digest, and share with other members of the colony. Termites can not determine the difference between the wood material from a tree in your back yard and the wood material found in your homes structure. They can infest almost every part of your home and can enter through a crack or opening as thin as a piece of paper. Subterranean termites are a common problem, and left undetected can cause serious damage. Billions are spent annually in the U.S. to control subterranean termite infestations and repair damage they cause. Subterranean termites will also eat the back of the sheet rock in the wall, cardboard, books, pictures hanging from a wall, and anything made from cellulose. Sub-termites may gain access through cracks in the slab or seams where plumbing and electrical lines penetrate the concrete. They can also gain access from the perimeter of your home.
A soil treatment can be performed to eliminate a current infestation and prevent future infestations. The goal of a soil treatment is to establish a continuous chemical barrier around a structure and anything leading into the structure. When done correctly a barrier can last for many years. There are two types of termiticides used in soil treatments, they are repellents and non repellents. Repellents are designed to be detected by the termites and intended to keep termites from entering a treated zone. Because they can be detected. Termites will try to find away around these treatments. Non repellent termiticides are not detected by termites. They do not try to find a way around them. Once the termites go through the liquid barrier they will carry the chemical back to the colony and transfer it to the queen. We use only non repellent termiticides.
As virtually all homes are built on a wooden frame, the possibility of termite activity exists at some point. No matter what separates the wood from the soil, including concrete slabs, termites can work their way into the structure through an opening as small as 1/64 of an inch, or about the thickness of a standard credit card. You probably won't see evidence of the termites until damage is done. Termites tunnel through wood and beams rarely breaking through the surface hollowing it out from inside, making most of the damage invisible. They go undetected for years until you start noticing sagging floors, discolored trim, bowed sheet rock, or mud in unusual places. Termite swarming is an obvious sign of activity but usually lasts less than one hour, and sometimes does not happen at all. Because there are so few visible warning signs, termite activity and the resulting damage can go undetected for years. Most homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover termite damage or treatments, it is necessary to take the proper steps to protect your home.
